Ando experiments with lacquer on acrylic to reinvent traditional son mai lacquer painting. The transparent acrylic allows light to pass through layers of lacquer, creating a dual-surface effect: the front and back of the work interact like specimens under a microscope, with layered textures and colours reminiscent of earth strata.
